Happy Day Of Crass Commercialism Devoted To Making You Feel Compelled To Spend Money You May Not Have To Demonstrate Your Love For Someone Who Should Already Be Aware Of Your Love That A Corporation Named After A Third Rate Saint! Granted that is a little long to put on a card and my apologies to St. Valentine. I really have no idea if there is some sort of hierarchy of saints which would make my assessment of third rate accurate.
I have always been bothered by Valentine’s Day or Valentime’s Day as some are wont to say. (I don’t get to use wont nearly enough.) And it’s not just me. Most people say they don’t like the commercialized sentimentalism and yet it persists and seems to get more commercially crass and less sentimental each year.
What bothers me is the idea that just one day of the year is devoted to expressions of love. I think every day is a day we should allow our hearts to be open to love and not in a Jane Seymour designed jewelry kind of way. Just imagine how different the world would be if each day, each of us decided to share the love within us and make the day better for each person we encountered. It can be as simple as a warm heartfelt smile, a compliment and yes, if you look hard enough there is always something to compliment, or just a helping hand when needed.
Each of us has within us the capacity for unconditional love, but we tend to attach conditions to love. Let go of those conditions. Untether your soul and embrace the love and inner light that dwells within you and share it with those around you. Let love be your religion. It will change your life forever.
