Trifecta Writing Challenge – The Phone Rang At 4am

The phone rang at 4am. My heart pounded as I came out of a dream.

“Have I ever told you I wished you lived closer?”

“Once or twice,” I texted back.

Raging alcoholics have no sense of time.

This was my response to Trifecta’s 33 word challenge to complete the story ‘The phone rang at 4am.’

  1. Heh. It’s not always raging alcoholics, sometimes it’s drunk college students. :))

  2. Very amusing. But I’m confused…did it ring because of a text? Or did she just text him back after he said “I wish I lived closer?”

    • I’m glad you enjoyed it. It was all text conversation and I thought “texted back” was a simple, direct, and most importantly, brief way of communicating that.

  3. I thought it was going to head in a romantic direction. I like that you stopped that notion in a snap.
Also? She needs to turn her phone off at night. 😉
    Came from the Trifextra linkup.

  4. Thanks so much for linking up to Trifextra. Remember, this weekend’s entries are being judged by the Trifecta community, so make sure you visit the site at the close of the challenge to vote. Our linking service will not allow you to vote for a link from the same computer where it was submitted, so plan ahead! Voting closes 12 hours after the close of the challenge. Winners will be announced with the Monday post. Hope to see you back then.

  5. I really like that you can sense the frustration in “once or twice”, but that there’s also kindness as she didn’t hang up. 🙂

  6. It’s a great piece, no matter what I spew but, one of the daughter’s boyfriends had some drunk-dialer friends. He had call-forward, so he would set it up to ring at a local mortuary, or the automated announcement for the next bus at the nearest stop. Slept like a baby.

  7. I love this, its one of those things that you can read and it immediately allows you to relate to it in some way or another.

  8. Excellent response to the prompt. I’ve made a few of those calls, or in these days txt’s. You summed up the sadness with “Once or twice,” I texted back.
